Atualmente, o termo é empregado tanto para descrever as táticas frequentemente brutais da polícia e outras autoridades para forçar um prisioneiro a confessar ou revelar segredos, quanto, de forma mais leve, para se referir a questionamentos sobre assuntos menos significativos, como em ✰ "Jane gave Martha the third degree about her good-looking new boss."
