dizer / explicar o óbvio ululante; emprestar luz ao sol - (prov.) Do latim Lumen soli mutuum das. (Latin). (lit. "Tu emprestas à luz do sol.") Expressão usada tanto no sentido literal quanto figurado.
1. (fig.) dizer ou explicar o que é perfeitamente claro e inteligível; dizer/explicar o óbvio ululante. ✰ "Stating that Latvia has the right [to] decide how to proceed with its foreign and defense policy as well as its economic development may seem analogous to lending light to the sun." (Senators, 2017). (Afirmar que a Letônia tem o direito [de] decidir como proceder com sua política externa e de defesa, como também com seu desenvolvimento econômico, pode parecer análogo a dizer o óbvio ululante.)
2. (lit.) emprestar luz ao sol. ✰ "To reaffirm by argument the power of the mind over the body is like lending light to the sun because the sun is the primary source of all light..." deixar (alguém) solto / impune / em paz; liberar (alguém) de algo - (Let off). Esta expressão tem dois significados distintos:
1. não punir alguém por algo errado que ele/ela tenha feito. ✰ "A man convicted of perverting the course of justice by offering a police officer $200 to let him off drink-driving will be deported." (Auckland, 2021). (Um homem que dirigiu embriagado e ofereceu NZ$ 200 a um policial para deixá-lo solto, foi condenado por obstrução de justiça e será deportado.)
2. (GB) permitir que alguém faça alguma coisa; liberar, deixar em paz. ✰ Despite breaking the rules, the teacher decided to let Dominic off easy and allowed him to retake the exam. (Apesar de quebrar as regras, a professora decidiu deixar Dominic em paz e permitiu que ele refazesse o exame.)
