velha piada/história; piada/história repetitiva e sem graça - (lit. "castanha velha; castanha") Diz-se de uma piada, história ou peça musical que se tornou obsoleta, banal ou sem graça devido a muitas repetições. (Chestnut, trad. própria). ✰ "Warren interrupted and said with a flourish, 'It's an old chestnut, that's what it is,' much to the amusement of everybody there." (Jack e Page, 2007). (Warren interrompeu e disse com um floreio: 'É uma velha piada, é isso que é', para a diversão de todos os presentes.)

Segundo o Farlex Dictionary of Idioms, uma explicação plausível para esta expressão é que ela se originou de uma peça intitulada The Broken Sword, de William Dimond, na qual um personagem continua repetindo as mesmas histórias, uma delas acerca de uma sobreira, e é interrompido a cada vez por outro personagem que diz: "Você quis dizer castanheira? ... Já ouvi você contar essa piada vinte e sete vezes e tenho certeza de que era uma castanheira." A peça foi encenada pela primeira vez em 1816, mas o termo só entrou em voga a partir da década de 1880. macaco velho (em algo) - Diz-se de um indivíduo muito experiente em determinado assunto; astuto, calejado, perito. (Be an old hand; Macaco). ✰ "Fekete is an old hand at the theater, where he started off from the time he was 8 or 9 years old until the age of 17." (Murthy, 2017). (Fekete é um macaco velho em teatro, onde estreou dos 8 ou 9 anos de idade até os 17.)
