1. (lit.) estar ou viver sobre uma fina camada de gelo, esp. devido às mudanças climáticas. ✰ "Humanity is on thin ice – and that ice is melting fast." (Guterres apud Insurance). (A humanidade está vivendo sobre uma fina camada de gelo — e esse gelo está derretendo rapidamente.) (Guterres apud IPAM).
2. (fig.) estar em situação precária ou arriscada; estar em terreno pantanoso. ✰ "ITEM Club warns Brown is on thin ice with economy." (Bennett, 2005). (O [Ernst & Young] ITEM Club adverte que Brown está em terreno pantanoso com a economia.)

O primeiro registro desta expressão é de 1841 no ensaio Prudence, de Ralph Waldo Emerson. Aludia ao risco de patinar sobre o gelo fino e eventualmente adquiriu uma conotação mais abrangente para descrever qualquer situação precária ou arriscada.
