ultrapassar os limites (normais); ir um pouco além - (lit. "empurrar o envelope") ir além dos limites habituais/normais, fazendo algo novo, arrojado, etc. (Push the envelope). ✰ "Bringing us films like Parallel Mothers and Volver, Almodóvar has constantly pushed the envelope of filmmaking with his work." (Leishman, 2023). (Trazendo-nos filmes como Madres Paralelas e Volver, Almodóvar tem constantemente ultrapassado os limites do cinema com o seu trabalho.)

Esta expressão vem da aeronáutica, onde o termo “envelope” se refere a limites de desempenho que não devem ser ultrapassados por questões de segurança. Inicialmente restrita ao voo espacial, a expressão estendeu-se posteriormente a outras situações fisicamente ousadas e acabou adquirindo um sentido metafórico, abrangendo qualquer atividade que desafie os limites estabelecidos, como as atividades artísticas, esportivas, etc. (Pushing the envelope).
