Parece que não há um consenso quanto ao significado de Madalena arrependida:

1) cara de quem finge arrepender-se ou retratar-se por algo que tenha feito. ✰ "Bebeu muito, bateu na mulher e, quando a polícia chegou, ficou com cara de Madalena arrependida." (Mello, 2011).
2) expressão usada para se referir àquela pessoa que fez algo errado e sabe disso, dai fica com aquela cara de Madalena arrependida. ✰ "Depois de ficar dois meses sem aparecer, ele veio com aquela cara de Madalena arrependida." (Cara, 2020).
3) alguém que se arrepende do passado e/ou muda radicalmente de estilo de vida. (SeteMinutos.pt)

Esta expressão lusófona é de origem bíblica. Segundo o site do Almanaque Cultural Brasileiro:

Madalena Arrependida é uma pintura do artista barroco italiano Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. A pintura retrata uma Maria Madalena penitente, curvada de tristeza ao deixar para trás sua vida dissoluta, seus adornos abandonados ao seu redor. À época da sua conclusão, cerca de 1594-1595, a pintura era pouco convencional por seu realismo contemporâneo e seu desvio da iconografia tradicional de Madalena. (...)
A pintura retrata uma jovem morena, agachada ou de joelhos em uma cadeira baixa, com as mãos em seu colo. Do seu lado há uma coleção de joias e uma garrafa contendo um líquido, cerca de três quartos completos. Seu olhar está desviado do espectador, sua cabeça virada para baixo em uma posição que pode ser comparada aos retratos tradicionais de Jesus Cristo crucificado. Uma lágrima escorre pelo seu rosto. Quem é Maria Madalena?

Maria Madalena é uma personagem do Novo Testamento, apresentada como uma das discípulas mais devotas de Jesus Cristo. O Evangelho de Lucas, no Novo Testamento, cita: “Maria, chamada Madalena, da qual saíram sete demónios” (os sete pecados capitais: luxúria, ódio, cobiça, avareza, orgulho, gula e preguiça). Apesar de não haver qualquer fundamento bíblico para considerá-la como uma prostituta arrependida dos pecados e que teria pedido perdão a Cristo, esta versão é a que ficou vulgarmente conhecida.
