Esta expressão tem sido tradicionalmente usada para descrever um atributo do povo britânico em permanecer resoluto e frio (sem deixar transparecer suas emoções) em situações adversas. No entanto, o site GB Mag parece discordar:

Segundo a GB Mag, o termo surgiu nos Estados Unidos e foi usado pela primeira vez por Davy Crockett, soldado, homem de fronteira e político, em sua autobiografia de 1834, e foi publicado posteriormente em um dicionário de americanismos de 1848.
