1. ocupar-se com coisas fúteis; ficar de boa. ✰ Instead of working on the assignment, she decided to mess about on his phone, wasting valuable time and not being productive at all. (Em vez de trabalhar na tarefa, ela decidiu ficar de boa no telefone, perdendo um tempo valioso e não sendo produtiva.)

ficar à toa / de boa ; brincar (no sexo); transar; fazer sexo promíscuo; ter um caso (ou casos) - (Mess around). Esta expressão tem vários significados:
1. não fazer nada; ficar à toa/de boa. ✰ A: "What have you done today?" B: "Nothing, I just messed around." (Ibidem). (A: — O que você fez hoje? B: — Nada, só fiquei de boa.)
2. explorar as preliminares (antes do sexo); "brincar"; divertir-se. ✰ "It wasn’t a serious relationship, we just messed around a bit." (Ibidem). (Não era uma relação séria, a gente só se divertia um pouco.)
3. ter relação sexual; transar. ✰ "At 16 he had only ever messed around with his girlfriend, the pastor's daughter." (Aos 16 anos de idade, ele só havia transado com sua namorada, a filha do pastor.)
4. fazer sexo promíscuo (e.g., com vários parceiros). ✰ The guy messed around with multiple women at the same time in his youth. (O cara fez sexo com várias mulheres ao mesmo tempo em sua juventude.)
5. ter um ou mais casos extraconjugais. ✰ "I found out he was messing around with my best friend." (Mess around with). (Eu descobri que ele estava tendo um caso com a minha melhor amiga.)

In the Champions League, every error — big or small — ends in the same outcome." (McGowan, 2022). (um) banana / covarde - Diz-se de um homem fraco e covarde; um banana. (Milksop). ✰ "The politician was accused of being a milksop who couldn’t get anything done." (Milquetoast). (O político foi acusado de ser um banana que não conseguia fazer nada.)

Atenção: O termo milksop não tem a conotação de alguém que seja "incapaz de impor sua autoridade". Neste caso, podemos dizer a laxing person ou a lenient person. O termo pushover também pode ser usado na acepção de molenga.

([O artigo] também explicava por que, como mãe, sempre senti que tinha um milhão e uma coisas para fazer, mas nunca me senti realmente no controle de nada.)

1. (lit.) algo que está a milhões de quilômetros de distância real. ✰ "The earth is a planet that is million miles away from the sun and it moves around or orbits the sun." (Ranjit, 2016). (A terra é um planeta que está a milhões de quilômetros do sol e orbita o sol, ou seja, move-se ao seu redor.) 2. (fig.) uma distância imaginária: um lugar muito longe, físico ou não. ✰ "I can honestly say that my mental state of mind is million miles away from the wreck I was before I started my therapy." (Cognitive, 2016). (Posso dizer honestamente que meu estado mental está a um milhão de quilômetros de distância do desastre que eu era antes de começar minha terapia.)

pergunta de um milhão de dólares - Diz-se de uma pergunta muito importante ou difícil de responder. (Million-dollar). Do programa de TV Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? ["Quem quer ser um milionário?", em tradução livre], em que os participantes tentam ganhar um prêmio de $1 milhão de dólares respondendo à última pergunta. ✰ "He then asked [John] Carpenter if he had been surprised that the million-dollar question was so easy." (Moraes, 1999). (Ele então perguntou a [John] Carpenter se ele havia ficado surpreso com o fato de a pergunta de um milhão de dólares ser tão fácil.)
