A expressão shiver my timbers apareceu impressa em 1795, em uma publicação em série chamada Tomahawk, or Censor General, que fornece um "apanhado de uma nova sra. tragédia chamada 'Oposição' (trad. nossa). Nas palavras do "velho marinheiro": ✰ "Peace? Shiver my timbers! what a noise ye make – ye seem to be fonder of peace than ye be of quiet." (Ibidem, trad. própria). (Paz? Ora, faça-me o favor! que barulho você faz – você parece gostar mais da paz do que do silêncio.)

Esta expressão está associada a piratas, frequentemente usada na literatura para expressar choque, surpresa ou aborrecimento. Originária da gíria náutica, refere-se às estruturas de madeira de sustentação de um navio que balança em mar agitado. A frase visa evocar medo e admiração, semelhante a expressões como Well, blow me down! (Macacos me mordam!) ou May God strike me alive and well (Que um raio me parta; Que Deus me castigue).
