O gato comeu a língua. (BR) / O gato comeu-te a língua. (PT) - (Cat got one's tongue). Esta expressão, ger. usada como pergunta a uma criança, é uma maneira de induzir a criança a falar, por exemplo, quando ela está muito tímida. ✰ I asked him a direct question, but it's like a cat got his tongue; he hasn't said a word. (O dono da loja pegou o ladrão em flagrante em câmeras de vigilância, furtando mercadoria das prateleiras.)

Popularizada pelo escritor Sir Walter Scott, a expressão red-handed é de origem escocesa e foi usada em 1819 em seu romance histórico Ivanhoé. Antes disso, era grafada red-hand ou redhand. A expressão remonta ao século XV. (Caught red-handed).
