estar / ficar submerso (em algo); estar / ficar perdido; passar por cima da autoridade (de alguém) - (In over (one's) head). Esta expressão tem múltiplos significados:
1. (lit.) refere-se a um item que está posicionado em algum lugar acima da cabeça de uma pessoa no espaço físico; submerso. ✰ As the storm intensified, the boat started taking on water, and soon, they were in over their heads, struggling to keep the vessel afloat. (À medida que a tempestade se intensificava, o barco começou a encher de água e logo eles ficaram submersos, lutando para mantê-lo flutuando.)
2. (fig.) estar envolvido com alguém ou algo além de sua capacidade; estar perdido. ✰ "They are all in over their heads with this money business." (Ibidem). (Eles estão todos perdidos com esse negócio de dinheiro.)
3. (fig.) estar em uma situação em que alguém ignora a autoridade imediata de outra pessoa e recorre diretamente a um superior para resolver um problema, buscar aprovação etc. ✰ "Barnier said that any attempt by the UK to get a better deal by going over his head and appealing directly to EU leaders would be a waste of time."
