Segundo um artigo da National Public Radio (apud Dunklau, 2020), as placas bem-humoradas de conscientização no trânsito estão ganhando popularidade nas rodovias interestaduais dos Estados Unidos. Na Virgínia, circulou uma mensagem que dizia "Driving fast and furious? That's Ludacris." (Ibidem). (Veloz e furioso no volante? Isso é redículo.) Em Illinois, no ano de 2020 foi lançada esta mensagem de trânsito logo após a legalização da maconha no estado: "Got The Munchies? Get Food Delivered. Don't Drive High!" (Ibidem). (Bateu a larica? Peça comida em casa. Não dirija chapado!)

Um estudo do Conselho em Pesquisa de Transporte da Virgínia (VTRC) apontou que mensagens de segurança não convencionais, especialmente sobre distração ao volante e o uso do cinto, são vistas como mais eficazes. Fatores como idade, gênero e comportamento influenciam essa percepção, com mulheres e motoristas mais velhos mostrando maior confiança nessas mensagens. Já mensagens sobre direção segura ou agressiva foram menos compreendidas. Trocadilhos e humor nas mensagens estimulam a cognição, especialmente entre motoristas jovens, cujo engajamento cerebral com essas mensagens é mais intenso. (VTRC).
