desgastar-se / queimar; dar pane seca; destruir (pelo fogo); ficar esgotado / esgotar-se - (Burn out, Collins). Este verbo frásico é aplicável a vários contextos, podendo ser usado nas acepções de:
1. (eng. mec.) tornar-se ou fazer com que fique desgastado ou inoperante em consequência de calor ou fricção; queimar. ✰ "The circuit affected must be further tested to determine why the fuse burned out." (bigchillcar). (O circuito afetado deve ser testado mais detalhadamente para determinar por que o fusível queimou.)
2. (v.i.) (de um foguete, motor a jato etc.) parar de funcionar devido à exaustão do abastecimento de combustível; dar pane seca. (Pane). ✰ "The boat's fuel tanks and engine burned out, and it appears that no fuel and oil remain on board." (Newport, 2011). (Os tanques de combustível e o motor do barco deram pane seca e parece que não sobrou nenhum combustível e óleo a bordo.)
3. (v.t., ger. passivo) destruir pelo fogo/incêndio. ✰ "The American Red Cross is assisting the families burned out by the fire." (Peel et al., 2019). (A Cruz Vermelha Americana está assistindo as famílias [que tiveram suas casas] destruídas pelo incêndio.)
4. tornar-se ou fazer com que fique exausto/esgotado por conta de autoindulgência ou excesso de trabalho. ✰ After years of high-stress projects and tight deadlines, Mark felt completely burned out from work, prompting him to take a sabbatical to recharge. (Depois de anos de projetos estressantes e prazos apertados, o Mark sentiu-se completamente esgotado pelo trabalho, o que o levou a tirar um período sabático para recarregar as energias.)
