Esta expressão originou-se a partir da tradução de uma antiga frase grega, porém há quem a considere ofensiva por conta do uso posterior do termo spade como uma injúria racial para se referir a uma pessoa negra. 1. chamar (alguém) para falar (em uma reunião, aula etc.). ✰ "Benitez squinted into the darkened house as she called on the student to speak." (Martinez). (Benitez olhou, com os olhos semicerrados, para dentro da casa escura enquanto chamava o aluno para falar.)
2. permitir que alguém fale em uma reunião; dar a palavra. ✰ As the meeting continued, the CEO called on each department head to provide updates on their respective projects.
