aguentar o tranco; aguentar a barra - (lit. "morder a bala") enfrentar dificuldades inevitáveis com coragem e determinação, suportando a dor ou o desconforto que delas decorre. Esta expressão foi introduzida por Rudyard Kipling no romance The Light that Failed (1891). Ela possivelmente remonta à prática de pacientes mordendo uma bala para suportar a dor durante procedimentos cirúrgicos sem anestesia, embora essa ideia careça de provas concretas, já que tiras de couro eram mais frequentemente utilizadas. A frase pode ter evoluído de to bite the cartridge (morder o cartucho), associada à Rebelião Indiana de 1857, enquanto a variante chew a bullet (mastigar uma bala) já era usada com significado similar desde pelo menos 1796. 1. (lit.) cair pesadamente no chão; cair na poeira; comer poeira. ✰ The bike racer bit the dust as he turned around the corner. (O motociclista caiu na poeira ao virar a esquina.)
2. (fig., eufem.) morrer; bater as botas; abotoar o paletó; "virar presunto" (Virar). ✰ In the final scene of the movie, the villain bites the dust after an epic battle. (Na cena final do filme, o vilão bate as botas após uma batalha épica.)
