fazer o papel de (alguém); expressar (emoção/impulso negativo); portar-se mal - Esta expressão é usada nas acepções de:
1. (artes cênicas) fazer o papel de uma determinada personagem; representar. ✰ Judy Garland acted out Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. (Judy Garland fez o papel de Dorothy em O Mágico de Oz.)
2. demonstrar emoções ou impulsos inconscientes por meio de ações, sem estar ciente disso. (Ammer, 2013, p. 3, trad. própria). ✰ "He acted out his frustration by refusing to work." (Libman, 1992). (Ele expressou sua frustração recusando-se a trabalhar.)

O significado deste verbo frásico vem da teoria psicológica do século XX e normalmente (mas nem sempre) se refere a impulsos e emoções negativas ou hostis. O verbo pode ser usado intransitivamente nos sentidos de "portar-se mal", "agir de forma perturbadora". (Act out, 2013, p. 3). ✰ The 11-year boy acted out in class. (O menino de 11 anos portou-se mal na aula.)
